Beneath the rising stars -- European cooperations
// Lena de Vries___EUROPE WITHOUT BORDERS. Those who find themselves in the lucky position of being EU citizens have the right to travel, live, and work everywhere within the European Union. With 27 member states, this signifies multiple opportunities to study abroad and discover new cultures. >
Mutual understanding, broadened horizons and the strengthening of a European identity are the results. In order to dissolve European borders in a geographical sense as well, a group of EU member states has decided to abolish border controls completely, so that millions of Europeans can travel freely – without a passport. //

// Annika Haeseler___ENVIRONMENT BUILDS BRIDGES. They are going to visit each other, research environmental projects and write articles: 68 schools with over 5000 students as well as 20 newspapers from six countries are going to take part in the project “Environment builds bridges - young people in the European dialogue“ for more than three years. The young students from 34 schools in Germany and partner groups from Poland, Czech Republic, Slowakia, Slovenia and Hungary are going on a quest for interesting environmental projects like professional journalists. >
What kind of environmental problems do the different countries have? And what kind of solutions can they find? These and other questions are going to be dealt with and answered by the students. The articles will be published in all participating countries. >
The idea of my design is based on the desire of the students to create a better world. I took that literally and outlined a Europe-construction-kit which can be understood and implemented individually. “Do your best.“ //

// Kai Gläser___ALL EQUAL - ALL SAME. UNITED COLOURS OF EUROPE - PAINT THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE! “United colours of Europe - paint the change you want to see!“ is a project of the European campaign “all equal - all same“ – for difference, human rights and participation. The project took place from 1.5.2007 to 31.8.2007 in 18 European countries. The opening event started in Groß Kölzig with a graffiti workshop and a reggae concert. >
The aim of the project is to reflect the motto and the purpose of the campaign through workshops, lectures, graffiti workshops and festivals. Everyone can spray a wall and the materials (spray cans, walls) are for free. All the pictures of the campaign were photographed and printed in a book that is published by the European counsel. //

// Silke Gravert___LITERATURE PROJECT “CLOSE-UPS”. In autumn 2001 the women’s initiative “Berlin-Warsaw” in Berlin and the “Kujawsko Pomorskie Centrum Promocji Kobiet (Centre for the promotion of women)” in Thorne started the literature project “close-ups”. >
The women discovered that during conferences, work meetings, celebrating or in the correspondence neither side had had opportunity to learn much from each other’s life until then. A completely new kind of getting to know the other side has been initiated – through a literature project. Women from Berlin and Thorne wrote biographical texts with special attention to the other country.
The texts have been translated in German and Polish and published in a collective book “close-ups” in autumn/winter 2003. My illustrations visualise the titles from the book. //

// Marie Luise Flitner___EUROPEAN CAPITALS OF CULTURE. Since 1985 the European Union (EU) yearly names one or two European Capitals of Culture - in 2008 these are Liverpool/Great Britain and Stavanger/Norway, two ports whose cultural meaning made me curious. >
Starting at the meaning of logo/advertisment of both cities, I tried to expand the cultural horizon from „Sea Liverpool“ across the North Sea to the „open port“ in Stavanger. As connecting element between the sky lines of both towns I chose one of the human sculptures of Anthony Gormley which are placed in great number at diverse locations in both ports. >
Another symbol of connection between both European Capitals of Culture 2008 are the emblems which I integrated in the letters of the port names but each emblem in the colours of the other port. //

// Miriam Wittmershaus___INTER-CULTURAL DIALOGUE. The president of the European Committee José Barroso and the Commissioner for Multilingualism Leonard Orban gathered a team of experts in July 2007 for the purpose of discussing the inter-cultural dialogue among countries in the EU. >
The meeting focused on examining the speech, culture and religion of countries belonging to the EU and investigating the ways of communication between them. One of the main goals among others was to mediate foreign language competence to different cultures which could contribute to an integrative society in Europe. //

// Silke Kötter___COFFEE EUROPE - PERSONAL ENGAGEMENT FOR THE COMMUNITY. Coffee Europe is the project of Karl Piaty, an Austrian confectioner. In 2005 he started to present European countries with their national specialities. >
Every Friday he offers the specialities of one European country at his confectionery at Waidhoffen/Ybbs. For five years he has been arranging the Coffee Europe on 9th of May together with another confectioner Alice Sabreffá from Budweis/Czech Republic. The aim of both is to support the interest of people for the EU with the help of the traditions of the European coffee culture. They want to encourage people to talk together and to find out more about the EU. >
The different elements in my graphics show figuratively the liberty of Europeans – that it is possible to change things with personal engagement. The colours of the graphics are the colours of the EU, Austria and the Czech Republic. //

// Laura Drechsler___KINEMA. Promotion of foreign languages and media literacy, regional studies and film analysis are the subjects of the school project within the partnership between the land Lower Saxony and the french region Haute-Normandie which is already accomplishing successfully its second year. Meanwhile, five schools from Lower Saxony take part in the project and include it in their foreign language lessons. >
KINEMA organizes meetings of German and French students and teachers with movie-makers from the other countries. Besides the intercultural learning the film-cultural education is the central intention of the project. KINEMA provides the opportunity for German and French teachers to learn under the guidance of highly reputed film-scholars. The project is also pulling together the German-French student groups. >
The students communicate about the chosen films via an internet platform installed only for that purpose. They make the experience of the other film-culture including a meeting with the film-producers and finally participate in a seminar lasting three days where the students present the results of their work. //
